Mungo Powney was born in 1972 and graduated from Newcastle University in 1994. He has exhibited his work with several UK galleries, in both group and solo shows. Mungo describes himself as a fan of ‘the hard-won image’ and wants to create an inner light in his work, as if the colours are lit from within. He very often reworks an image many times until he feels he has achieved a deep visceral energy within it.
Mungo’s arresting use of colour in domestic settings suggests the fond memories of intimacy imbued with a sense of a happiness with contentment and stability. The timeless things around us fascinate Mungo, from a woman washing by a window to an evening meal. Mungo constantly tries to push past the the technical or academic to locate a poetic image.
