Mary Liddell

British painter Mary Liddell lives and works near Bath, England. She is the great great grandniece of Alice Liddell – the original Alice in Wonderland. Mary studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Central School of Art in London in the 1980s under the tutelage of renowned visionary and surrealist painter Cecil Collins

She returned to Bath in 2013 after living  in Wellington, New Zealand for 5 years where the clarity of light and intense colour had a profound influence on her work. Colour has always been a primary concern of her works in both oil and watercolour. Mary likes to work “en plein air” in landscape, and from live subjects, fruit and flowers and everyday objects.

As well as more observational still lifes and landscapes, Mary also paints more lyrical works based on fantasy and imagination. While these paintings are also inspired by figures, landscapes and objects, they are composed straight from the imagination and are worked out during the process of painting and are directed by the needs of the  composition itself.
In 2019 Mary moved her home and studio to the glorious Chew Valley where she works in a beautiful converted barn. She regularly runs various courses for adults and children, and holds open studio  events by invitation. She has years of teaching experience in both England and New Zealand where she taught at the Inverlochy Art School in Wellington.

Mary’s work can be seen nationally in various galleries, by invitation at her studio, and in many private collections  in  the USA, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and Europe.
